-book project-

Posted in Uncategorized on April 9, 2010 by gcandra

we’re told to make a minimum of 12 pages. We can choose any topics, so I chose to make a book about FOOD!

I was born and raised in Indonesia, moved to Vancouver at the age of seventeen. I love Indonesian food, but I couldnt really find an authentic Indonesian Restaurant here in Vancouver.

CHECK OUT MY RECIPE BOOK!! all of the recipes are very easy to follow :)

GRACE RECIPE BOOK

I got the recipes from some websites, but sometimes I tweaked them a bit just to make it simpler. :)

-sandals-

This pair of sandals is made entirely of Bristol paper with white glue as the fastener. The paper is folded in a particular way to maximize the structural stability of the sandals and yet makes them aesthetically pleasing. The white sandals offer both comfort and a fashionable look that will not bore the users because the straps can be adjusted into many different arrangements.

media: 2 ply Bristol board and white glue.

interaction design project

Posted in Uncategorized on April 8, 2010 by gcandra

Along with my two design fellows, Kelsey Boorman and Erin Wormsbecker, we designed a 4’x4’x8’ personal space that attempted to evoke a sense of confusion. The boxes are different in size, and it is possible for a person to inhabit the inside and to interact with the boxes by rotating them one by one. The final project generates the feeling of confusion by the unbalanced use of line, shape, size, light and movement.

PATE SABLEE

Posted in Uncategorized on April 8, 2010 by gcandra

Last night, I was craving for something buttery, but not too sweet. So, I ended up baking these pate sablees at 2 in the morning :)

Basically pate sablee is like butter cookies, but it melts in your mouth like not other cookies. Its really easy to make too! :D

ingredients:

1 3/4 cups all purpose flour

1 cup butter (cut into small pieces and slightly softened)

pinch of salt

2 medium egg yolks

preparations:

Heap the flour on the counter and make a well. Put in the butter, sugar and salt. With your fingertips, mix and cream the butter with the sugar and salt, then add the egg yolks and work them indelicately with your fingertips

Little by little, draw the flour into the centre and work the mixture delicately with your fingers until you have a homogenous dough.

Using the palm of your hand, push the dough away from you 3 or 4 times until it is completely smooth. Roll it into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until ready to use.

My friend, Allie gave my this recipe. I believed she got this recipe from a pastry cookbook from the VPL. Thanks so much for sharing, Allie. They were awesome! :D

poster

Posted in Uncategorized on March 20, 2010 by gcandra

For the second project, we’re told to create a poster no smaller than 11 X 17″

one of the criteria is to communicate an issue local to Vancouver that we feel strongly about, then make a poster to inspire the audiences to take positive action for the change.

I was not sure what I was going to do until I looked at the Vancouver Olympics mascot, Muk Muk. I loveeeed Muk Muk. I did some research on Muk Muk and I found out that Muk Muk was Vancouver Island marmot that is endangered right now. I wanted my poster to speak to the audience and informed them that Vancouver Island Marmot is endangered.

grace poster FINAL1

It was my first time dealing with illustrator, so I was quite pleased with the final outcome :)

A few years ago I read an article somewhere about a little girl having a brain illness that made her unable to have control over half of her body. It happened that half of her brain (the right hemisphere) was damaged. Her right leg and right hands were not able to function normally. When she walked, suddenly her right leg would give up and she would fall; same thing happened to her right hands. It is beyond belief that the doctor removed the little girl’s right hemisphere and filled it with a specific fluid and she recovers from the illness. About a week or two after the surgery, the little girl was able to walk and eat using both of her hands. I found it really amazing that the left hemisphere of the brain has its own plasticity to change shape and creating new connections between neuron to the lost damaged ones. Brain is so awesome in terms of its abilities to the point where we can takehalf of it out and it still functions normally. smile
